Brave Initiatives is on a mission to empower high school girls to be agents of change in the world through design, coding, and leadership training. In week-long camps high school-age females participate in lively activities and instruction paired together to help them see themselves as leaders in technology and in life.
Started in Chicago four years ago with one week-long camp, Brave will run camps across the world in 2019. In 2018, KSM Consulting was proud to host the first partner-driven camp, bringing BraveCamp to Indianapolis and chartering a new way of delivering camps leveraging the resources and relationships of companies aligned with Brave’s mission. This year, partnerships like the one with KSMC have opened the door for expansion of camps in new cities allowing Brave to reach young women all across the world.
July 15-19th, young women from high schools across Indianapolis gathered at KSMC for BraveCamp Indy – a fun week packed full of exploration and learning around coding, empathy, community challenges, and careers in technology. Brave supports curriculums that teach the campers how to apply technology to solve challenges in addition to understanding the broad spectrum of opportunities to pursue a tech career. Hearing from two panels of women in leadership roles in tech careers and receiving instruction from a number of professionals throughout the week, helps to open their eyes to the possibilities available to them.
Supporting organizations, Bell Techlogix, City of Indianapolis DORIS Research, Girls Inc., Indianapolis Public Schools, Innovatemap, Metonymy Media, myCOI, PactSafe, and TechPoint provided talent, resources, and, lunch to help make the week happen and give the campers a well-rounded view of leadership in tech.
“Be brave. Be what it is. When I came here, I was so shy. I really didn’t talk to anyone or like working with people. After BraveCamp, I liked what I was doing. I really liked connections with other people.”
