for-profit Case study

Auditing workspace

Picture it. It is January 2020, and you employ over 200 people who are mostly CPA’s and financial experts who work 9 to 5 at a physical office, which looks like it was last updated in the 1980’s. Reality hits (well a Pandemic hits), your 9-to-5’ers are sent home to work for a year, your business changes, you begin hiring remote employees across the country. You hire DORIS to collect data from your people to make well-rounded, data-driven decisions with respect to your space and how it might support your business as it functions throughout this tumult.

Human Ecology issue

The financial services firm had partnered with a real estate broker and an architect to find the perfect space. Adding in DORIS, the firm was equipped with data to answer important questions such as: “Do we still need a physical office?” and “What is the purpose of our office?”

Key insights

When loud is actually quiet

DORIS loves a good paradox, and we found one here. Though many employees described the office as “loud” and “distracting,” when measured with a decibel reader, DORIS found that the office was actually very quiet (measuring an average of 48 decibels). This is comparable to a library, while 60dB is typical of an average office. When an office is open and quiet, conversations can easily carry, disrupting those nearby. Quiet spaces are breeding grounds for noise because it’s easier to hear unwanted sound (aka noise).

The DORIS impact

Ultimately, the financial services firm did not stop listening once they decided to move into a new, updated space. They used DORIS methodologies to gather teams together in their neighborhoods at the HQ office to create their own designs for wall art. When you walk into each neighborhood, you get a sense of their character immediately.

I worked at a previous firm and they moved workspaces too. That process was…well, we were not involved. It felt very different with DORIS, open to wanting feedback and hearing from everyone, not just certain individuals. That set it apart for me; everybody’s voice was important.
