DORIS’ extensive research conducted with leadership and employees of a municipality gave them a holistic understanding of their current state challenges to strategically plan their future real estate.

The leaders of a municipality are embarking on a large-scale project considering the consolidation of up to 9 separate buildings into one central campus location. The project’s focus was on understanding how the location can best support both employees and community members.

Key insights

The leaders of this municipality understand the importance of their physical presence in the city for two purposes;

for the community to interact with their local government and receive support services and
their presence in the community physically to create a critical mass of people for city vibrancy.

Staff members are happy working a hybrid model. The 49% hybrid preference is NOT the notable statistic. What is super interesting for this group is the 42% of staff who would prefer fully remote work, which is in conflict with the goal of physical presence in the community.

Additionally, DORIS performed a usability study over 10 days at 9 buildings throughout the city. Leaders used this data to build consensus with respect to hybrid working, supporting the decision to consolidate real estate into a new campus, and helped the architects identify square footage needs.

The DORIS impact

DORIS’s work has continued beyond physical space. The time between the decision to consolidate to move-in provides ample opportunity to assess operational change and bring people along, including research supporting community customer service and hybrid working.
