DORIS worked with a manufacturing company’s non-production staff and leadership across several locations. Looking to the future, leadership wanted to understand the geographic necessities, productivity enhancements, workstyle needs, and cultural goals of all non-production staff and then prioritize a move-forward plan.

Key insights

To relocate or not to relocate, that is the question.

The key to this decision was three-fold for employees. They need access to each other, commute time, and hybrid working. Let’s break it down. People will support relocating the headquarters (requiring a longer commute) if it will create easier access to each other, and they can balance the commute with the number of days they need tobe in office.

On average, people were willing to make about a 40-minute commute to the office.

Additionally, people are willing to come in, especially if they have an assigned desk!

Meanwhile...

As leaders went through the corporate real estate decision-making process, they wanted to identify something they could implement more immediately based on DORIS findings. Step 1…multiple monitors!

It was an easy fix to make all workstations at the current workplace more consistently functional.

The DORIS impact

Equipped with DORIS’s research, the leadership team created a roadmap to achieve cohesion for their people through their lab and office space. Working together, they ultimately decided on transformational change, moving their Headquarters location to the heart of Chicago, Illinois. Their work product and people are innovative, creative, and leading edge. It only made sense to ensure their space showcases this.

Without this project, I think we would possibly be in the same position as we were two years ago. DORIS helped put a lot of things into perspective, telling us (the whole organization) what we need. Our leadership has presented the results and shared with the greater organization. I think the research was thorough and captured what folks are feeling in the office environment. It helped define us as an organization. How do we treat our employees in the sense of providing the space needed. That's the value, you're listening to your people and making decisions based on that.
